Timing and ABWE 2027

“Timing is everything.” Along with “Location, Location, Location,” this is a catch phrase that has built-in limitations. I might be enthralled with a particularly beautiful location but haven’t the money to buy a tree in the area, let alone a lot! Similarly, there may be an exactly right time to do something, but hitting that time exactly is beyond the control of the doer!
With the celebration of ABWE’s 100th anniversary coming in 2027, it would have been perfect for Mediko to have been unwrapped that year. Yet the author is well aware of his health and mortality. Waiting until that year to publish the book would have been smart, but only God knows whether the author will still be around for that celebration.
There is something else, too. We as humans, even children of the Lord God, are prone to many failings. As a human author, I know that the perfectionist in me would delight in adding, adjusting, editing, rewriting, and perfecting the book ad nauseum. I have learned that far too many projects never see the light of day because they are tweaked to death!
The process of publishing a book is complicated. It is difficult in advance to determine when that process will end. When it finally became clear that, after twenty years, all of the writing, editing, seeking of permissions, and steps toward publication would end in 2023, the last thing that came to this writer’s mind was waiting another four years to publish.
If, God willing, there were to be another edition, I would happily call for work on the illustrations, and correct any errors found in the book, but if that second edition were not to be, I would still hope that the book would serve as it is when the exciting days of the centennial roll around. At least it will be available in time!
